UNIVERSITÀ DI ARISTOTELE DI THESSALONIKI (A.U.Th.)
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 1925 by the government of Alexander Papanastasiou. The law for its foundation put great emphasis mainly on the development of the Theoretical Sciences, which fitted in well with the ideas of that time. Thus, the School of Philosophy began to operate in 1926. One year later, started its operation, for the first time, the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences followed in 1929 by the Faculty of Law and Economic Sciences.
Considerably later, in 1942, the remaining two schools which had been envisaged in the founding law of 1925, that is the Medical School and the Theological School, began to operate. After the war, more precisely in 1950, the Veterinary Faculty was established to be followed, in the next year, by the Institutes of Foreign Languages. The first stage in the establishment of new faculties was completed with the foundation of the School of Engineering in 1955 and of the School of Dentistry (which began in 1959 as a school within the Medical Faculty, but since 1971 has operated as a Faculty in its own right).
The third stage in the development and expansion of the University began during the 1980s with the establishment of new faculties such as that of Teacher Training in 1983, and of Fine Arts in 1984, as well as the independent Schools, not included in specific faculties, Athletics (1983), and of Journalism and Mass Media Studies (1991). It should also be noted that throughout al these years many new schools were established, adding to those already existing within the faculties.
With the implementation of the Law 1268/82 concerning the organisation of Universities, the present - day distribution of the schools into faculties took place.
